DOTS: Cervical cancer screening app
Recent national guidelines recommend cervical cancer screening every three years instead of yearly, and not treating young women with abnormal cells but instead monitoring them closely every six to 12 months until it subsides.
SOM Tech worked with the PCORI-funded team on a patient centered app aimed to educate young women about the potential dangers of over screening, and to help them understand the new guidelines as they apply to both normal and abnormal test results. The study intervention occurred before they see the doctor, to help them ask the doctor questions and to assist them with treatment choices. The study was conducted in clinics in Southern California that serve underinsured women - 40% Latina. The iPad app is in both English and Spanish and has three intervention arms.
